John Bell, a farmer from North Carolina, along with his wife and children settled in northern Robertson County, Tennessee, in 1804 on a 320 acre farm along the Red River. A peaceful life surrounded them for 13 years but in 1817 their lives were changed forever.

Strange animals looming around the property.
Knocking sounds could be heard on the doors and walls.
The sound of a rat gnawing on the bed post.
Chains being dragged through the house
Stones dropped on the wooden floors.
Gulping and choking sounds.

The terrified family shared these experiences with a neighbor, and eventually with more people around the area. A formal investigation was launched with the hope of finding a reason.  As time went by, more and more people came to see and hear this force, which became known as “The Bell Witch.”

“Kate” tormented the Bell family almost daily with John and his daughter feeling the bulk of the abuse. She (Kate) finally accomplished her mission on the  Bell farm. On December 20,1820 John Bell had died. It was believed that he was poisoned by Kate, and Kate took full credit for his death. And then in March of 1821 young Betsy broke off her engagement with Joshua Gardner.

The legend of the Bell Witch is part of Tennessee history and is still taught in schools today.
